Fred Schmalz

“You don’t grasp his Legendary status until you walk with Fred through the United Soccer Coaches Convention. You better not be in a rush, because you won’t make it 3 feet at any given time without someone stopping to exchange soccer stories or coaching philosophy with the “Boss”. I can sit and listen to his soccer and life experiences for hours if not days! Coach Fred thank you for being such an influence in my life. You are not just an Evansville Legend but a true Legend across the country. “ -Steve McCullough
Fred Schmalz- Don’t need to say anything else when talking soccer…. LEGEND! The “Boss” has influenced the entire Tristate soccer community, from his first day as head coach at the University of Evansville in 1979. In the mid-’80s his precious Purple Aces gained their first-ever #1 ranking in the country while guiding two other teams to that same status. He has spent 40 years involved in the Olympic Development Program, 12 years as Region 2 Director of Coaching (DOC), and 10 years as Indiana’s DOC. Fred has coached 20 All Americans and mentored countless coaches, many of who moved on to play in the MLS, MLS, USL, and the EPL.
I’ve known Fred my entire soccer life. I played for him at the youth level, played against him in college, officiated his Aces (now that is a treat only a ref can appreciate!), and served as an assistant coach for him at UE. To this day he is still sharp as a tack, remembering every team and player he has coached over the years. It is no coincidence that I am and always will be a lifelong Fred Smalz supporter
